Public speaking fear is one of the most common fears. It regularly score number one in studies of common fears. It beats death, fear of flying etc. Interestingly we are not born with public speaking fear. We are born with just two fears - the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises.
Public speaking fear is learnt and taught as we grow up, usually by well meaning parents and grownups. Advice such as silence is golden or it is better to say nothing and be thought a fool rather than say something and remove all doubt contribute to public speaking anxiety. It is good advice in certain circumstances but there are times when the advice should be speak up and speak out.
